Built for the 90's
At Breaks for Days we are known for going on and on about the 1980's and how good Hip Hop was back in the days...but please don't get it twisted, we have mad love for the 90's too!
There were some incredible independent releases throughout the decade, many of which captured the true feeling of the mid 90's Hip Hop youth, delivering a raw message compared to the watered-down major label product. The beats were crunchy and crispy, and the rhymes hardcore. No wonder many of these elusive, low budget, and limited pressing releases are now so damned hard to find....and when they do pop up they can cost an arm and a leg. So let's take a peep in the 90's crates and see what we can find...

Going Back to Our Roots
Here at the Daily Diggers HQ we
have always been big fans of THE ROOTS. If you have seen them live then you know exactly what we are talking about - their onstage renditions of their own catalogue (as well as other HIP HOP classics like "Paper Thin" and "Top Billin'") make you realise Hip Hop can be amazing to watch as a live artform, and still sound dope on wax. So we know to keep checking back for them ....even if they have been signed to DEF JAM! With the man Ahmir "?LOVE" Thompson at the drums we are guaranteed shit will always be funky! In tribute here's a little DAILY DIGGERS REMIX action on THE ROOTS courtesy of the BEAT DETECTIVE. You don't see us....but we see YOU!

We've purchased lots of records lately...so it's seems a shame not to use them to their fullest potential. Yep we love to play our wax out and keep the crowd rockin'.....but flippin' a dope beat is ALWAYS a priority!

More 45rpm break action
Some recent heavy excavations in the dusty basements of London Town's record shops have helped us unearth some dope 45rpm pieces of late....yeah that's right we're still on a mission
for those crusty breaks! Thanks also to the original Beatmeister SKYE for his invaluable nods, winks and smiles when the right record pops up out of the crates. Over the years SKYE has put us up on a shed-load of incredible break records....and we now officially give props and thanks to him for being such an inspiration. Keep holdin' down tradition SKYE you are truly a master of the game! Right let's go head to head with some fonky sevens...
WILLIAM STUCKEY - Disco Fly
This track is hard enough to find on an original 12 inch...so to spot a copy on 7" had me buc whilin'.....some serious
funky disco drums here Uptempo in style and b-boy friendly so don't blame me if you find yourself doing a freeze and breakin' your domepiece when you peep the drums on the soundclip!
Always been a favourite party record of ours simply for the fly-like and spacey dance rhythm, and the reaction the drums ALWAYS get from an appreciative crowd. Plus not forgetting the electronic "whoooosh" sound over the drums. Released in 1977 on the ICA label it has recently been re-issued on 12" vinyl for the beat heads, and no doubt a bargain for those who don't want to cut up their prized $100 dollar vinyl.
Get down with your bad self!
JESSE GRESHAM PLUS 3 - The Penguin pts 1&2
Now if you want a record that has a drum break longer than a hot minute...then this could be the baby you have been looking for.
From the intro we're spoilt with some snappy drums with the funkiest shuffle on rimshots
you could wish for, then the sleazy suggestive bassline drops in to set the groove. But the treat is still to come.....at the end of part 2 GRESHAM PLUS 3 drop down again to just the bass and drum and rocks us again for a second time. What more could you possibly want? First brought to the attention of UK break heads on the classic UK break beat LP "SKOOL BEATS" if our memories serve us correctly EDIT: actually it was LONDON BEATS 2. Another b-boy favourite from 1965 on the JEWEL label.
ALICE STREET GANG - Brasilian Hustle
Now this one is strictly speaking a straight-up disco cut from 1976 on
the very colourful AMAZON RECORDS label...and is a very respectable track in its own right with some very easy listening type riffs in the main verse.....but years ago B-Boys picked up on this cut for it's crazy breakdown drums and sinister strings. I remember when this was being played back in the days, much uprocking and gesturing would begin throughout the main portion of the song....with a fierce floor battle resumed on the break as the mood of the music changes dramatically. Have a listen and behold the power of disco music! A Bambaataa classic.
QUILLER - Theme from the BBC TV Series - Richard Denton & Martin Cook
I feel we may be going O/D on B-Boy drums today...but hey that's why Hip Hop started in the first place right??
To keep the crowd dancing. So let's indulge.
QUILLER was a 1970's drama series on BBC TV, about a Spy who is a highly skilled driver, pilot, diver, linguist and martial artist. He would never carry a firearm, reasoning that if he was ever caught, anything he has on him could be explained except a gun. This BBC-TV series first aired in 1975 and ran for 13 episodes, but more importantly had an amazing drum break in the theme music. This 45rpm single is not that hard to track down being that it is on the famous and well distributed BBC Record label - keep your eyes peeled at your local charity shop and this will turn up.
Enjoy the beats...

Just Messin' with Beats pt6
I recently stumbled onto DJ MARK the 45 KINGs official website for the first time (click HERE) and it's good to see he is still capable or putting together a funky ass beat.
I'm sure many of you have seen the Youtube footage of the 45 KING rockin' the Vestax Handytrax doubles with
a mini-mixer and a handful of dope 45s. Spinning back and forth and keeping it tight like some new jeans!
Well peep his website as there is plenty more of that stuff for your viewing pleasure, plus some new beats to check out and a discography well worthy of reading in full. We're fans of the man who brought us the likes of "This Cut's Got Flavor", "The Posse Is Large", and the mic skills of Lakim Shabazz.
So it made us dig through the early flavor unit material and yep - we stil love it as much now as we did back then. When names like Pete Rock, Large Pro, and Marley Marl get banded around...it's only fair to add DJ MARK the 45 KING to that very same list. Without him Hip Hop in the 80's would have been a less funkier place to be!
Here's a LATEE remix for the Flavor Unit fans.

Buy Kurious?
edit on 17th Feb '08: Great launch party in Brum...thanks to the whole peeps up there
for their warm welcome and to the crowd for dancing all night, and knowing good music when they hear it. We hope you enjoyed the vibe as we did - props and thanks goes to DJ Cro, Stilts, Roy Roastbeef, Wattsy, Ricky Reissue and the Crate Escape Records mob. We look forward to our return. And we can't forget Liam at CENSORED record store for the vinyl treats and a cuppa tea - the perfect hangover cure! .....kid dyno
I never thought I would answer "YES" when first asked this question.....but when we first heard the snippets of the KURIOUS JORGE Demo Sessions a few months back, we were amazed to find these tracks were, in our humble opinions, better than some of the tracks that made JORGE's '94 LP release "CONSTIPATED MONKEY". Now don't get us wrong we love that LP and in
particular "Fresh Out The Box" is a tune always on rotation with the Diggers. But here KURIOUS sounds more relaxed on the mic, and the Sam Sever/Pete Nice/Prince Paul/SD50s beats are perfect fodder for his flow. No dilution - just raw beats & rhymes. Some seriously funky b-lines and chunky drum loops are the order of the day here, encapsulating the flavour of the time perfectly. These demos give you the impression they were created with nothing in mind other than to rock his shit lovely, rather than aimed at attracting a deal or pleasing the million dollar record company execs. And we have always admired Kurious's style of delivery, and sense of comedy. Remember how he made us "walk like a duck"? And the "two tumours in my bloomers" incident?? Plus anyone who brings Grimm Reaper to the mic deserves a handshake in our opinion.
Now Crate Escape Records bring you the vinyl releases of KURIOUS the DEMO SESSIONS, available exclusively through Jibbering Records and the brainchild of DJ CRO at MAIN INGREDIENT RADIO. Check out his weekly show on www.newstyleradio.co.uk Monday nights 12pm midnight for the dopest new Hip Hop releases plus some vintage butter. It's dope-on-rope YO!
KURIOUS has always been a fave MC for a lot of people, and it's a shame there wasn't more dope product from him available before. After all he has been down with The Beatnuts, Stretch & Bobbito, Pete Nice, Groove Merchantz et al for years! We feel he was capable of much more, so props also goes out to Stonegroove Records for "All Great" in 2001 which we recommend highly (Props to Mr. Lawson).
So it's all good for JORGE fans - please spell it with a "J", not with a "G"!!
Pre-orders have kicked off this weekend, so don't dilly dally or prepared to be disappointed. It's limited to a wax pressing of 200 hand-numbered copies with dope sticker cover created by STILTS. And those of you in the UK who wanna make the KURIOUS DEMO SESSIONS launch party in Birmingham on Friday 15th Feb - we hope to see you there. We will be dropping some funky shit on the night for you breakfiends!

Daily Diggers Live on Air
Our fellow Hip Hop junkie DJ JUST ONE has again invited the DAILY DIGGERS
to appear live on his Hip Hop Sessions radio show tomorrow night (Friday 8th Feb 2008). The show is from 10pm - 12 midnight and you can catch it at 96.9FM on your radio (Norfolk Area) or tune in live over the net at Future Radio .Again we are gonna drop some dusty breaks from yesteryear, and of course some crazy dope Hip Hop from the 80's and 90's. Our homeslice JUST ONE will be playing a dedication to J Dilla (as he died 2 years ago today) between 10pm-11pm. Then we intend to rip the tables to shreds from 11pm onwards. It will be a madkap affair so don't miss it.....if you snooze you lose!
We hope you will find the time to listen in, and maybe send us a message (through the studio messenger service online) while we are in the studio. Although it is hard to play requests made on the night, please feel free to drop a lil comment after this post with your "most wanted" record to hear on the night, and we will excavate through our crates and try to please.
30-something JUST ONE is a veteran of the Hip Hop game here in the UK, and has deejayed with more legends than I could possibly list.....but here's a few anyway.....Kool DJ Herc, Skratch Piklz, Gangstarr, MC Shan, Grandmaster Caz, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E Fresh, Afrika Bambaata....
I'm sure you get the picture. In fact the story behind us hooking up with JUST is an obvious one - he was at EVERY damn hip hop gig we went to through the 90's so it was only a matter of time before we were introduced through VINYL DIALECT (Precise, Olson and Ezra), and immediately we thought "hell...we know YOU!" So BIG PROPS goes to JUST ONE for being down with Hip Hop for such a long time, for repping it how it SHOULD be done, and for putting in mad work into the game.........and of course for putting on the DAILY DIGGERS!
Make sure you are locked in on Friday night! We shall try and post up a podcast of the show for those that can't tune in live on the night. We like to keep you Hip Hoppers well fed.

P&O - cross channel mixing
It's been a week or so since our last post, so what better way to come back at you than with a dope little 20-minute mix from the boys at P&O. No, it's not the ferry company, but these guys do perform some cross-channel mixing!
P&O, or DJ PRECISE & DJ OLSON, are the two founding members of
THE PLAIGAWRISTS deejay crew that tore it up at the DMC and VESTAX DJ championships throughout the early noughties. These dudes are also the members, producers, and DJs of VINYL DIALECT (formerly on the Bad Magic label) otherwise known as VINYL DEEZ.
Now these guys have always impressed the hell out of me when it comes to turntable trickery - even in the mid 90s when I met these guys, their scratching and cutting was waaaay above par shall we say! Watching these two on the 1200s has always made me feel like A) I should practice more, or B) I should just give it up!
Back in 1999 we appeared together on the 12" release by SKYE on DC Records. Entitled "SKYE files Vol.3 - Scratch Mechanics" it featured a sandwich of crazy breaks & beats all chopped up by the beatmeister SKYE, with a filling of experimental cuts & scratches courtesy of Skye, DJ Proof, DJ Olson, DJ Precise, Kid Dynomite (yours truly) & Mr. Monkey.
But PRECISE & OLSON have a new project under way which has us very excited. After years of making beats in the studio, these guys have taken a step back for a moment, and re-invented the music they make. They still love to hit the crates and create, but now with MUSIC DE BEAUVOIR they offer us a new twist on the P&O sound. What they have done is to gather some talented young musicians, and together re-created their studio productions in a live venue, with instruments replacing samples. With two amazing live shows already under their belts, the studio recordings are due to hit vinyl real soon so watch this space.
The tracks we have heard so far are hard-hitting funky dancefloor killers, and with an undeniable KPM/Library music type flavour. With Precise and Olson conducting things and adding cuts n scratches to the mix...you can be sure of some serious sound!
You can find out more and listen to some of their dope productions on their myspace pages, simply click here or here.
But for now, let's get back to the music. Here's a 20-minute mix from P&O, featuring a wide range of music from new shizzle to old schizool, breaks and beats....but more importantly plenty of dope scratching for ya domepieces! Bring it on guys!
P&O mix

He's Nasty Baby!!
Ask 100 Hip Hoppers who their favourite rapper is, and the name LORD FINESSE will pop up more times than a defective toaster! And it goes without saying that we here at DAILY DIGGERS HQ would be shouting his corner too.
His careful choice of words and eloquent delivery of punchlines have astounded many fellow emcees and us listeners alike since he first dropped on wax with "Baby You Nasty" in '89. And with legendary freestyles and performances such as the Patterson Project Battle with Rhyme Inspector Percee P, he holds a firm place in Hip Hop history. (Check out the Patterson Projects rematch in the Video Bar on the bottom right).
Whilst nearly all of his releases on vinyl are highly sought after and demand a high price, those clever diggers over at VINYL ADDICTS have thought out-of-the-box and contacted the FUNKYMAN himself in search of a bigger fix of Finesse's funky phonetics!
Now the guys at VA have got some ill shit to drop on us - the likes of which you are unlikely to have heard unless your down with the FUNKYMAN himself. Superbootytuff props go to MIGHTY MAZE, SMOOV & REDKHAT for putting in mad work on this one! All in order to bring us the raw!
VA001 - LORD FINESSE & DJ MIKE SMOOTH - THE FUNKY MANEUVER EP featuring six dope unreleased cuts on vinyl to make ya eyeballs pop clean out the sockets. Taken straight from FINESSE's own demos and archives, we look forward to, amongst others, hearing the Nautilus version of "Bust A Little Something". It's gonna be dope-on-a-rope!
Funky Dope Maneuver
No Stoppin'
Bust a Move

Bust A Lil Something (Nautilus version)
Back To Back (Demo version)

Lord Finesse is the brother that you have to hear
I flow smooth like clouds in the atmosphere
I'm spectacular, so damn terrifyin'
That wack MCs dont think about ever tryin'
To dis or flip cause what it boils down to
You won't survive to step to me in round 2
I stand and expand like a great man
And swing a party like tarzan the apeman
Say rhymes that are necessary, make em extra-scary
Watch Finesse and take notes like a secretary
I get furious, display experience
Lord Finesse is nasty, PERIOD
YOU NASTY BABY!!
Lord Finesse in effect with the master rap
And I flip on the mic like a acrobat
I wont fret, step, but Ill make a rep
Usin vinyl wax, or a tape cassette
Think Im weak? take your next look
And get schooled and read like a textbook
Cause I'm the better man, and I never ran
MCs beat me? I give credit to whoever can
Cause I terrify, scare, and horrify
Couldn't win against me even if you let your father try
Hang and socialize, rhymes just multiply
Me and Mike get with it cause we both are fly
Lyrical lecture, word architecture
Rap director, the best in my sector
Microphone cool chief releasin' the smooth speech
I get nasty with a pen and some loose leaf
YOU NASTY BABY!!

LORD FINESSE
Kid Dyno

His careful choice of words and eloquent delivery of punchlines have astounded many fellow emcees and us listeners alike since he first dropped on wax with "Baby You Nasty" in '89. And with legendary freestyles and performances such as the Patterson Project Battle with Rhyme Inspector Percee P, he holds a firm place in Hip Hop history. (Check out the Patterson Projects rematch in the Video Bar on the bottom right).
